Short-eared Owl

Asio flammeus

Short-eared Owls are annual spring migrants to the Pribilofs, and are most likely during May. This species is an itinerant rodent eater, and it is likely that once on the Pribilofs Short-eared Owls have difficulty in obtaining enough food to successfully leave the island. The only other large owl found on the Pribilofs is the Snowy Owl, which is visually very distinctive from Short-eared. Look for this species along the island’s roads, especially around Telegraph Hill, Polovina Lake and Big Lake.
