Skylark

Alauda arvensis

Skylarks are typically found once every two seasons on the Pribilofs. Some years multiple birds are found, and in the summer of 2000 a pair was confirmed breeding between Polovina Lake and the airport. Most records occur in spring, during late May and early to mid June. Skylarks were also detected during the fall surveys of 2003 and 2004, in late September. All Pribilof birds belong to the Asian breeding subspecies,Alauda arvensis pekinensis. Look for the streaked underparts and nape, white outer tail and white tipped secondaries to identify this species. Skylarks should be looked for in the open tundra of the center of the island or in the short grassy areas around Novastoshna or Northeast Point.
