Cassin’s Auklet

Ptychoramphus aleuticus

This small, plump dark gray alcid breeds on Buldir, Agattu, Atka and Chagulak islands in the Aleutian chain. In the Pribilofs however it is recorded solely as an accidental species. The only confirmed record occurred on May 12, 1988. On the water, look for the bright white eye arcs and gray toned flanks to confidently rule out second summer Crested and Parakeet Auklets. In flight, Cassin’s Auklets will show grayish underwings and a very pale (almost white) belly. Both Parakeet and Crested Auklets have very dark underwings. Crested Auklet bellies are quite dark, and Parakeet Auklet underparts are entirely white.
