Gray-crowned Rosy Finch

Leucosticte tephrocotis

The umbrina subspecies of the Gray-crowned Rosy Finch is endemic to the Pribilof Islands. Like the Winter Wren, it has evolved to become much larger than other subspecies in order to survive the long, cold winter. It also has more rose-color in its wings, a pale bill, black throat, darker breast, and a more extensive gray hood. It is the only regular visitor to bird feeders in town, even nesting in building eves as a House Sparrow would do.
