Black Kite

Milvus migrans

The first and only record for Alaska and the continental United States (previous records are from Hawaii) coming from St. Paul Island, this species is a very common migratory raptor of temperate East Asia. The timing of this record is unexpected, though likely this individual arrived in the region as a fall wanderer and continued to move into the winter looking for a suitable location. While this species is not to be expected in the Pribilofs again, a September or early October arrival would be more in line with expectations.
