Least Auklet

Aethia pusilla

The smallest alcid in the world, the Least Auklet is even smaller (length-wise) than some sparrows! In fact, the Japanese name for the species is Ko-umisuzume, which translates to “Lesser Sea Sparrow!” It nests in large colonies in boulder covered beaches and boulder ramparts, and in scattered locations on the cliff faces. The breeding adult varies from nearly white to nearly all gray below, but always have a pure white throat and a very small red-orange tipped bill.
