Long-tailed Duck

Clangula hyemalis

Formerly known as “Oldsquaw,” the Long-tailed Duck can be found on many of the larger ponds and small lakes of the island. An uncommon breeder, their yodeling “owl-omelet, owl-omelet” call can be heard throughout the summer. Females are mostly brown with a whitish eyeline and a short tail, while the males have a dark brown head, neck, and breast, off-white face, and long tail streamers.
