Red-legged Kittiwake

Rissa brevirostris

Breeding on Buldir, Bogoslov, the Komadorskis, and the Pribilof Islands, the Red-legged Kittiwake is most easily viewed and studied here on St. Paul. Nesting on taller cliff faces along side the larger Black-legs, St. Paul really is THE place to visit to see Red-legs. Even when the bright scarlet legs and feet are not visible, the Red-legged can be identified by its darker upperwings and mantle, darker underwings, rounder head with smaller bill, and squeakier voice. Hundreds of both Kittiwake species are often seen bathing and roosting on ponds, lakes, and mudflats around the island.
