Rufous Hummingbird

Selasphorus rufus

This long distant migrant breeds no closer to the Pribilofs than near Seward on the Alaskan south central coast. An individual of unrecorded age was found on August 5, 1998 in poor condition in town. The bird was captured and an attempt was made to revive it to no avail. As there are no flowers with nectaries on the Pribilofs, and the nearest suitable habitat is nearly 600 miles away, it is unlikely that this or any other hummingbird would ever recover from such a serious navigational error.
