A regularly encountered pelagic species in the Bering Sea during the summer and fall, this species is only very rarely encountered from shore and is most often found offshore in deep water along the continental shelf break. All records of individuals seen from land have come on St. Paul Island since 1989, with a vast majority of those coming since 2010. All records are associated with powerful storms and this species should never be expected from land in the Pribilof Islands.
