Yellow-billed Loon

Gavia adamsii

The second most common loon in the Pribilof Islands, Yellow-billed’s should be looked for through the months of May and June and also through the late fall. Given close views, the bright yellow and upturned bill, and large size of this loon make it unmistakable in either alternate or basic plumage. In flight the large feet trailing behind the body will separate this species from all but the Common Loon. Basic adults are noticeably paler backed and crowned than Common Loons, and have a double-peaked head. Look for this species in any of the island’s bays, or in flight at SW or NE Points.
